Juried Photographic Exhibition

July 9- August 8 Opening Reception July 9: 6-8 PM

Gallery 14 invites artists working in all photographic media to submit works for a juried photographic exhibition which will be held July 9-August 8 at Gallery 14, 14 Mercer Street, Hopewell, NJ. Current members of Gallery 14 may NOT participate.

Judge: Kenneth Kaplowitz, Professor of Art at TCNJ (39 years), where he was Photography Coordinator for 21 years. He has a BA, Montclair University, an MA (Television and Film) from NYU, and an MFA (Sculpture and Studio Art) from Rutgers University. His photographic work appeared in two photography text books as well as 40 one-person exhibitions.

Submission Guidelines

1. Include 1.) cover sheet with the artist's name, home address, phone number and email address, 2.) a brief biography/resume, 3.) a numbered list of the photographs submitted, a CD with up to 5 JPEG images (4" x 6" at 300 dpi) (no other forms of submissions will be considered). Be sure to write your name on the CD.

2. The numbered list of titles of the photographs must correspond exactly in number and name with those on the CD. Please use the following format for titling your electronic files: your name_ number_ photo title_ framed dimensions_year created. For example : SmithJ_1_Evening on the River_16x20_2007.

3. Mail submissions to Gallery 14, 14 Mercer Street, Hopewell, NJ 08525. All submissions must include an entry fee of $20, check payable to Gallery 14. You may also drop off your submission packet to the gallery during our regular hours: Saturdays and Sundays, noon to 5 pm. Please include a stamped self-addressed envelope if you wish to have your CD returned.

Entrants will be notified of the juror’s decision by email after June 22. Photographs selected for exhibit must be brought to the Gallery ready for hanging on July 5 and 6 between 1-3 and 6-8 PM. Size of framed prints must correspond exactly to the size stated in your submission—no exceptions. Gallery 14 will make every reasonable effort to protect your work while it is in our possession, but is not legally responsible for it. Insure your work individually if that is a concern. The Gallery retains a 30% commission of work sold while on display there. Art Spring

Songwriting, drawing, jewelry making (chain maille), intro to pastels, and ways to drastically improve your guitar playing are among the workshops being offered beginning May 22 through June 6 by the West Windsor Arts Council. Even while their working hard towards opening the WW Arts Center at the beautifully renovated Princeton Junction Firehouse, the folks at WWAC continue to bring professionally taught art opportunities to regional adults and teenagers. Until the WW Arts Center officially opens its doors in September 2010, these weekend workshops will take place at the West Windsor Senior Center in the West Windsor Municipal Complex, 271 Clarksville Road, West Windsor.

Natural Formations

Sculptor Ayami Aoyama is exhibiting her remarkable work outdoors at the James A. Michener Art Museum’s Outdoor Sculpture Program March 20 through June 27, 2010. A quote on her card reads:

‘“Eight million gods dwell in everything” is a Japanese proverb that sculptor Ayami Aoyama honors through her carved stone sculptures. For her, all natural materials have their own spirit and she seeks to reveal that elemental life force through the work. Her marble and granite sculptures suggest both figurative forms and landscape in a style that is both minimal and abstract.’

Going Round and Round

Gallery 125’s most recent Call for Artists is for their upcoming exhibit, 4 ELEMENTS: Graffiti Show. Artists have been a little confused by the title. Should they enter things related to earth, wind, fire and water? Are they supposed to do graffiti on top of anything they submit? On your behalf, we contacted Joanne Donnelly at Gallery 125. She said that it IS a graffiti show – but artists are encouraged to think about and represent “graffiti” any way that they want to interpret it.

Still, inquiring minds at this blog figured there needed to be something more to the name of this show. We did a little digging, and are sharing the “aha” moment with you. According to the National Museum of Hip Hop, there are, indeed, “Four Elements” of hip hop culture. They are: b-boying (aka: break dancing), djing (DJ-ing), graffiti, and rap. Aha!

All work must be submitted on CD images as .jpg files preferably 4" x 6" at 300 DPI, and must include (on paper):
*Artist's name, home address, phone number and email address
*Brief bio/resume
*Submit up tp five JPEG images on one CD. JPEGs should be 300 dpi 4" x 6"
*Title, (**title of piece on paper must have the SAME title as the file on CD), medium, year created AND *dimensions of each entry
All submissions must include a *$20 check payable to: TDA/Gallery 125. The $20 allows you to submit up to five images for consideration.

Send your application package to Gallery 125, 125 S. Warren St., Trenton, NJ 08608. Please include a stamped, self-addressed envelope if you wish to have the visuals returned. Selected works will be announced on website www.gallery125.com by April 23, 2010

Art IS Busting Out All Over!

Another Opening Reception on April 9 takes place from 6 - 8 pm at the Silva Gallery at the Pennington School in Pennington, NJ. Twelve members of the Sculptors Association of New Jersey are celebrating Spring 2010, an exhibition of their work that will remain on display through April 29. Gallery hours are M-F 12-5 p.m.

Artist Frances Heinrich will be offering a gallery talk on "Today's Globalization Aesthetic" as part of the show. That takes place at noon on April 13 in the lecture hall at Pennington School's Stainton Hall. Visit the school's website for more information.

Juror Kenneth Kaplowitz based his selection of the 35 pieces on display for this exhibition on the theory of the 4 C's: contemplation, concept, craftsmanship and composition. From the Beginning...

Okay...they’ve been around for a few months, but there’s still a “new” artists’ group and a new exhibition space here in Mercer County. You’re invited to check out the Lawrenceville Main Street Artists Network as they greet their newest member artists on April 10, from 4 – 7 pm. They’re offering a taste of TJ's Famous Brooklyn Pizza and maybe even a glass of wine to visitors stopping by their street-side gallery space that evening.

Temptation to Behave

"Princeton Theological Seminary’s Department of Speech Communication in Ministry will present Bertolt Brecht’s The Caucasian Chalk Circle Thursday through Saturday, April 8 through 10 at 8:00 p.m., and Sunday, April 11 at 3:00 p.m. It will be presented in the Gambrell Room of Scheide Hall on the Seminary campus at 64 Mercer Street in Princeton.

"In The Caucasian Chalk Circle, a young woman succumbs to the terrible temptation to do good; a small child is torn between two mothers; and a clever miscreant becomes an ingenious judge. The play demonstrates how goodness and justice operate in a fractured world, a world torn apart by violence and war.

"The play has been adapted by director Robert Lanchester, the Seminary’s assistant instructor in speech. Seminary students make up the cast. The production is open to the public and free of charge, but seats are limited and must be reserved in advance. For reservations and/or information, contact Marija DiViaio at 609.497.7963."

The Heretics

In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Feminist Art Project and the Arts Council of Princeton, in partnership with the Princeton Artists Alliance, presents the New Jersey premiere of Joan Braderman's terrific humorous feature documentary film: The Heretics.

The film tells the story of the creation of the pioneering 1970s Heresies Collective and the publication of their groundbreaking art magazine Heresies. The film interviews twenty-four women (including Su Friedrich, filmmaker and Princeton University professor, the featured speaker for the evening), who talk about the extraordinary times they shared and their vision for the lives of generations of women artists to come.
