A Different View (2) at the Coryell

Janet Marsh Hunt is at it again, bringing 12 terrific abstract artists together in the Coryell Gallery for A Different View 2. BIG Show TONIGHT

Tonight is the opening reception for "The First 40..." -- a retrospective exhibition of works from Mercer County's permanent collection. About 170 works will be on display, spanning the 40 years since the County's Cultural and Heritage Commission was first established in 1970. Less than 1/2 of the work collected over the years is on display, and artists are inquiring: "Is my piece included?" Below is the list of artists included in THIS exhibit. We, of course, hope to do more in the future!

The exhibit takes place at ARTWORKS, 19 Everett Alley in Trenton, NJ, tonight, July 9, from 6 - 9 pm. (The terrific ARTWORKS center is located just off of Rte. 1 South (the Market Street exit), directly across Stockton Street from the state's DMV building. This is a "see and be seen event", so we hope to "see" you all there!

Art IS Busting Out All Over!

Another Opening Reception on April 9 takes place from 6 - 8 pm at the Silva Gallery at the Pennington School in Pennington, NJ. Twelve members of the Sculptors Association of New Jersey are celebrating Spring 2010, an exhibition of their work that will remain on display through April 29. Gallery hours are M-F 12-5 p.m.

Artist Frances Heinrich will be offering a gallery talk on "Today's Globalization Aesthetic" as part of the show. That takes place at noon on April 13 in the lecture hall at Pennington School's Stainton Hall. Visit the school's website for more information.

From the Beginning...

Okay...they’ve been around for a few months, but there’s still a “new” artists’ group and a new exhibition space here in Mercer County. You’re invited to check out the Lawrenceville Main Street Artists Network as they greet their newest member artists on April 10, from 4 – 7 pm. They’re offering a taste of TJ's Famous Brooklyn Pizza and maybe even a glass of wine to visitors stopping by their street-side gallery space that evening.

A Woman's Work

Works by artist Kate Graves are featured in a solo exhibit, By the Hand of Man and Nature at Capital Health, Mercer Campus in Trenton which opens on Sunday, March 14, 2010 from 3 - 5 pm.

The reception will include a live theremin performance by musician Kip Rosser. On view will be both some of Kate's remarkable quilts and her recent watercolor portraits of trees. Kate says: "Trees are carbon blueprints of light. They also embody the effects of their environments, and what has been exacted upon them by both man and nature."

A show of ceramic work at Artworks

There will be a public reception on Saturday, March 6, from 6 to 9 p.m. with music by the band "WINDJAMMER," featuring Andrew Weiss, who has either been a member of or worked with the Rollins Band, Ween, Yoko Ono, Pigface and Café’ Tacuba among others.

Around the Campfire, scheduled to coincide with the National Council on Education for Ceramic Arts' annual conference in Philly, opens tonight and will remain on view March 6 through April 17 at Artworks’ main gallery, Stockton St., Trenton (just off Rte. 1 across from the DMV). The show is curated by Debbie Reichard, who is also exhibiting. Other participating artists include: Lesley Baker, Emily Bivens, Danielle Bursk, James Jansma, Tom Lauerman, Rory Mahon, Kathleen Preziosi, Paul Henry Ramirez, Rob Raphael, Jerilyn Virden and Julie Wills. The show will also feature a “Wall of Voodoo,” where ceramic mugs and affordable objects by local artists will be for sale.

Spreading the "Love" in Princeton

Small World Coffee’s two cafes features its first annual juried LOVE SHOW in February with works by 36 artists represented. “In an effort to spread the love...” Small World Coffee will be hosting an opening night party for the show, with all proceeds from the evening going to support the Arts Council of Princeton.

Opening party: Friday, February 5th, 8:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m; suggested donation $20. The event features tasty snacks; a SILENT AUCTION with donated art works by featured artists including Ellie Wyeth, Paul Muldoon, Ifat Schatsky, Robin Resch, Pamela Kogen, and Jannick Wildberg: live performances by local musicians Chris Harford, Dinner, and Sarah Donner and additional music provided by DJ Nim. “Love Show 2010” t-shirts will be for sale, with all proceeds going to the Arts Council.

Art D'Eco (...d'eco...d'eco...d'eco...)

Art D’Eco, an exhibition featuring thirty-four works of art with a “green” theme will be on display at Gallery 125 from February 12 through April 3, 2010, with an opening reception Friday, February 12, from 6 to 9 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

“...Art D’Eco showcases art that utilizes found objects, recycled materials, non-traditional materials and raises awareness about the impact of environmental issues affecting us. Included in the exhibit are an assortment of works that span the utilitarian, fantastical and whimsical...”

The juror for this exhibit was Michelle Barfoot, Associate Professor of Digital Media Arts at Mercer MCCC. In addition to her work as an educator, Michelle (BFA, Studio Art and Masters, Industrial Design) is an artist who uses her work to explore human experience and meaning in a digital ecosphere.

The gallery is located at 125 S. Warren St. at the corner of W. Lafayette St., across from the Trenton Marriott. Art Venues Rise

Viridian Gallery, Pennington

Jack Koeppel, who - with his family - owned the Queenstown Gallery on South Main Street in Pennington from 1965 - 2005, is reopening a new gallery in the same location. You're invited to join him on Saturday afternoon, December 5, from noon - 4 pm for warm cider and other seasonal treats; or that evening from 6 - 8 pm for a wine & cheese reception to celebrate the grand opening of Viridian Gallery!

And while we're talking about "phoenix" (new from old) art venues, thanks to Will Ostergaard (newly annointed as the King of New Venues for this blog!) for sharing information about the Alfa Art Gallery at 108 Church Street in New Brunswick. They have an art exhibition, Transfigured, opening next Friday, November 20 @ 7:30-10:30pm that has some interesting artists for fans of figurative and expressionistic work (including Lidia Simeonov, recently named the 2010 Artist of the Year by Pittsburgh's Boxheart Gallery.)

It may be of particular interest to regional artists to note that Alfa Art has recently received its tax exempt status, and welcomes submissions both locally and from all over the world in the fields of contemporary fine art, sculpture and photography. As always, check out any gallery carefully before agreeing to be exhibited there. If you're not familiar with the gallery, make a point to visit. Talk with artists who have exhibited with the Gallery in the past. Research Gallery owners and staff. Be responsible about discussing terms, fees, responsibilities.

Heaven Hell and whatever's In Between

Visitors to the fantastic American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, MD are well aware of the orgy of creativity that can be sparked by the death of someone close to even the most non-artistic person. [Oh, okay...you caught me. You might know this even if you haven’t made the pilgrimage to the AVAM yet. But you’ve got to get down there...promise me!] That same pulsing energy in the hands of a lifelong artist can sometimes generate work that pushes out beyond the norm. It sounds as if Highwire Gallery has some of this work on display in their upcoming exhibition: Heaven, Hell and Original Sin.

Fiber artists may find the work of Philly-based fiber artist Melissa Maddonni Haims (creator of the Heaven and Hell portions of the show) especially interesting. She’s been working feverishly with yarn (knitting, crocheting, stitching) since her mother died 2 years ago, creating a personal version of heaven and hell. Much of her “Heaven” is specific – organic, unconventional sculptures memorializing people who have died. Her backroom Hell apparently evokes Dante-esque imagery including damned inhabitants and towering terrains. The middle gallery (Original Sin?) represents a visual dialogue between The Grimm Sisters, aka artists Rochelle Marcus Dinkin and Rachel Isaac, are on display.

The Opening Reception takes place during Philadelphia’s next First Friday event: November 6, from 5 – 9 pm and runs through November 29. Highwire Gallery is located at 2040 Frankford Avenue in Philadelphia.

Re-examining Work in Old City

Photographer/artist Lorraine Raywood, freshly returned from her 13th ride for Anchor House (home for runaways) in Trenton, has a solo exhibition coming up next month at The Muse Gallery in Old City, Philadelphia. For this show, she’s decided to re-explore images from earlier work using photographic emulsion and other media to adjust, enhance, and alter the surfaces. The ‘sneak preview’ of the work is intriguing.

The show is up from September 1 through October 1, 2009, and the Opening Reception on Friday, September 4th, 5 to 8pm, coincides with Philadelphia’s rocking First Friday festivities, so you can make a night of it. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday from 12:00 to 5:00 PM.

The MUSE Gallery is, in their own words, “...an artist-run gallery dedicated to exploring individual visions in shaping the world as we experience it...(that) affirms the role of the arts in the community: to provoke thoughtfulness, stir the senses, awaken awareness of beauty and to lead us beyond ourselves.” (I love a good vision statement!) Meandering in Lambertville

Art Imitates Art, Jennifer Cadoff

Gail Bracegirdle and Jennifer Cadoff have a two-person show, Meanderings, opening this week at the Artists’ Gallery (32 Coryell Street, Lambertville, NJ). The show goes from August 7 through September 8, and the Opening Reception is this Saturday, August 8, from 6 – 9 pm.

Lately Jennifer – who also works in pastels and printmaking – has been generating lovely graphic black and white drawings of familiar and beloved objects (including her omnipresent cats!) using her personal take on pointillism. Gail continues to explore luminous moments in nature and life while gently pushing her watercolor techniques. (She’s also, for my money, one of the best watercolor instructors in the area.) If you can’t make the reception, there will be a "Meet the Artists" closing event on Sunday, September 6, from 3:00 - 6:00 pm.

Artists' Gallery is a coop of professional visual artists (selected for membership by jury) who administer, staff, and curate all exhibits in the gallery.
