Peter Arakawa and Rita Herzfeld, are the real deal: artists' artists who work obsessively in various media and create works that leave the creatives among us inspired and itching to get back to our own work and try something new. Their work is on display at The Gallery at Mercer County Community College through October 20th, 2011, so you have 2 weeks left to catch a bit of their energy for yourself. A Different View (2) at the Coryell

Janet Marsh Hunt is at it again, bringing 12 terrific abstract artists together in the Coryell Gallery for A Different View 2. "Art From Found Objects"
A Juried Exhibition at the Monmouth Museum
September 12 - October 31, 2010


This exhibition focuses on artwork created from the undisguised, but often modified, use of common found objects that are not normally considered art, often because they already have a non-art function.


Found art derives its identity as "Art" from the designation placed upon it by the artist. "Trash Art" is included in this exhibition as works are primarily comprised from components that have been discarded and then found. 75% of the media used to create works for this exhibition must be from either discarded, reusable or found objects.

JUROR
The juror is Harriet Taub, Executive Director, Materials for the Arts (MFTA), NYC Department of Cultural Affairs.


ELIGIBILITY
Open to all artists world-wide age 18 and over. All artwork entered must be original creations by the artist and must have been completed within in the last five years.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Submissions are limited to a maximum of TWO pieces. Artists are requested to submit digital images in JPEG format either via email or on a CD.

Monmouth Museum Members: FREE (see membership form at www.monmouthmuseum.org) Non-members: $20 per piece entered (limit: 2 pieces)

Sculptor Ayami Aoyama is exhibiting her remarkable work outdoors at the James A. Michener Art Museum’s Outdoor Sculpture Program March 20 through June 27, 2010. A quote on her card reads:

‘“Eight million gods dwell in everything” is a Japanese proverb that sculptor Ayami Aoyama honors through her carved stone sculptures. For her, all natural materials have their own spirit and she seeks to reveal that elemental life force through the work. Her marble and granite sculptures suggest both figurative forms and landscape in a style that is both minimal and abstract.’

A show of ceramic work at Artworks

There will be a public reception on Saturday, March 6, from 6 to 9 p.m. with music by the band "WINDJAMMER," featuring Andrew Weiss, who has either been a member of or worked with the Rollins Band, Ween, Yoko Ono, Pigface and Café’ Tacuba among others.

Around the Campfire, scheduled to coincide with the National Council on Education for Ceramic Arts' annual conference in Philly, opens tonight and will remain on view March 6 through April 17 at Artworks’ main gallery, Stockton St., Trenton (just off Rte. 1 across from the DMV). The show is curated by Debbie Reichard, who is also exhibiting. Other participating artists include: Lesley Baker, Emily Bivens, Danielle Bursk, James Jansma, Tom Lauerman, Rory Mahon, Kathleen Preziosi, Paul Henry Ramirez, Rob Raphael, Jerilyn Virden and Julie Wills. The show will also feature a “Wall of Voodoo,” where ceramic mugs and affordable objects by local artists will be for sale.

Mercer County Artists!!!

The Gallery, MCCC

The Prospectus for this year’s Mercer County Artists exhibition has been mailed out, so artists on the mailing list should be looking for their copy in the mail this week. The prospectus is also available for download as a pdf on The Gallery page of Mercer County Community College’s website.

Jurying will take place this year at The Gallery on MCCC’s West Windsor campus (directions) on Saturday, February 13. Drop off your work (1 or 2 pieces) between 9:30 am and noon. Pick up works not selected for this year’s exhibit between 3:45 pm and 5 pm. Show dates for the exhibit will be February 22 – April 1, 2010.

Juror:
This year’s juror is C.J. Mugavero, who is currently celebrating her 24th year as a gallery owner and art dealer. Her current Artful Deposit Gallery is located on Farnsworth Avenue in historic Bordentown City, NJ. (The original Artful Deposit gallery was in Monmouth County.) C.J. is also the on-air host and producer of "Artful Living with C.J.", available for view on Comcast and on the web at Youtube.com.

This exhibit is sponsored by the Mercer County Cultural & Heritage Commission. Each year works on display are selected for Mercer County Purchase Awards. These works are purchased and become part of the County’s permanent art collection.

Art D'Eco (...d'eco...d'eco...d'eco...)

Art D’Eco, an exhibition featuring thirty-four works of art with a “green” theme will be on display at Gallery 125 from February 12 through April 3, 2010, with an opening reception Friday, February 12, from 6 to 9 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

“...Art D’Eco showcases art that utilizes found objects, recycled materials, non-traditional materials and raises awareness about the impact of environmental issues affecting us. Included in the exhibit are an assortment of works that span the utilitarian, fantastical and whimsical...”

The juror for this exhibit was Michelle Barfoot, Associate Professor of Digital Media Arts at Mercer MCCC. In addition to her work as an educator, Michelle (BFA, Studio Art and Masters, Industrial Design) is an artist who uses her work to explore human experience and meaning in a digital ecosphere.

The gallery is located at 125 S. Warren St. at the corner of W. Lafayette St., across from the Trenton Marriott. James Grant at Mariboe

The Mariboe Gallery at Peddie School presents “Existential Search,” an exhibition of sculpture by James Clark from January 8 – 27, 2010. There will be an opening reception (free and open to the public) on the evening of Friday, January 8, from 6.30 – 8 p.m.

James Clark has been a fixture of the New York sculpture scene for decades, recognized for his innovative use of found objects, lights, fiber optics, and balloons. His current work with electroluminescence includes wall-hung works of white enameled steel that are outlined and activated by filaments encased in flexible tubing. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.

Marc-Antoine Goulard

Gallerist Ruth Morpeth opens a one-man exhibit by French artist/musician Marc-Antoine Goulard this weekend, and the preview images are compelling (although I have to ask: has this man studied with Pat Martin, too???!!!) Goulard, an abstract painter, was schooled as a classical musician, studying the flute at the Conservatoire de Musique in Paris as well as saxophone and jazz composition at the Berklee School of Music in Boston, but says, "...it is in painting that I found my voice."

Goulard has had shows in commercial galleries in New York, Los Angeles, and Paris, and in shows at the United Nations, the French Institute, and Columbia University in New York. In 2006, he was an artist in residence at the Joseph and Anni Albers Foundation in New Haven.
