Take a Minute. Honor Someone Special.

Thomas Jefferson's Favorite Web Sites by Robert Meganck

New Jersey’s Governor’s Office on Volunteerism was started quite a few years ago. One of the traditions they got going is the NJ State Governor’s Jefferson Awards. The Awards are given in four general categories:

"Community Pillar" Award for individuals whose volunteer service runs deep and wide, across many categories of service, making significant contribution to life in their community of residence;

"Lifetime Service" Award for those who lifelong commitment to volunteerism has made a measurable impact to the communities they serve;

"Environmental Stewardship" Award goes to volunteers who pioneer and promote energy conservation and environmental action to foster a clean, green, sustainable environment here in NJ; and

The "Ambassador" Award honors those residents who extend their volunteer service beyond the borders of NJ in efforts to make the world a better place.

The Arts and Humanities world is filled with committed, passionate volunteers. There’s still a week left to nominate one of them (or even a non-arts/humanities-related volunteer!). You can do it easily online at the
NJ State Governor’s Jefferson Awards site. Nominations must be in by February 15.

Practicing the Art of Being Human

From the Erdman Center, Princeton Theological Seminary, a conversation on March 2, 6:30 pm:

“Too often religion seems to fuel more hatred than love, more conflict than collaboration. For three unique friends—a rabbi, a pastor, and a sheikh—their relationship goes to the heart of interfaith understanding and embodies a revolutionary spirit of healing. Princeton Seminary alumnus and pastor Don MacKenzie, Rabbi Ted Falcon, and Sheikh Jamal Rahman will be at The Erdman Center on the campus of Princeton Seminary to discuss their book, Getting to the Heart of Interfaith: The Eye-Opening, Hope-Filled Friendship of a Pastor, a Rabbi, and a Sheikh (SkyLight Paths, September 2009)…Pastor Don, Rabbi Ted, and Sheikh Jamal bring a message of deep hope and profound possibilities for healing both person and planet.”

Light refreshments will be served after the discussion, followed by a book signing.

The public is welcome to attend and there is no cost, but advance registration is required. To register visit
www.ptsem.edu/ce or call 609.497.7990.

Calling all Graphic Artists!!! Time Limited!

Heads up for all you graphic artists out there!

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) invites contractors to submit proposals for a design for a new “Art Works” logo for the National Endowment for the Arts. Winning bidder would also produce a finished design that may be reproduced by the Agency in print and online. (Please note: They're NOT looking for a change of their current logo - above. They're looking for branding images/ideas for the "Art Works" campaign. Check out the NEA website if you want more information about the campaign.)

On the RFP form you’ll find a “Statement of Work/solicitation” for the job. The NEA is looking for designs that will give a graphic identity to “Art Works,” the tagline that NEA Chairman Rocco Landsman has been using to help brand the work of the Agency.

The NEA is focused on the triple meaning of “Art Works”:

1. “Art Works” is a noun that refers to the works of art that artists create.

2. “Art Works” reminds us that a goal of art is to work on audiences and viewers to inspire, transport, and challenge them.

3. “Art Works” is a reminder that arts workers are real workers who are part of this country’s real economy. They earn salaries, support families, pay taxes. Artists are also entrepreneurs and placemakers, who revitalize towns, cities, and neighborhoods – both the economies and the ethos of them.

Questions concerning this proposal shall be submitted only via email to harrisl@arts.gov before 5:00 pm (EST) on Wednesday, February 10, 2010. Please submit your proposals by Friday, February 26, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. (EST) via email to artworksrfp@arts.gov. An evaluation team will rank each submission (with a scoring of up to 100 points). The winning proposal will not only rank highly, but will also be financially competitive. Maximum estimate for this campaign is $25,000. See the RFP for full information.
