BIG Show TONIGHT





Tonight is the opening reception for "The First 40..." -- a retrospective exhibition of works from Mercer County's permanent collection. About 170 works will be on display, spanning the 40 years since the County's Cultural and Heritage Commission was first established in 1970. Less than 1/2 of the work collected over the years is on display, and artists are inquiring: "Is my piece included?" Below is the list of artists included in THIS exhibit. We, of course, hope to do more in the future!

The exhibit takes place at ARTWORKS, 19 Everett Alley in Trenton, NJ, tonight, July 9, from 6 - 9 pm. (The terrific ARTWORKS center is located just off of Rte. 1 South (the Market Street exit), directly across Stockton Street from the state's DMV building. This is a "see and be seen event", so we hope to "see" you all there!

Post-Fire Works Plans!


After the sizzle, bright lights and explosions of this July 4th weekend, you may want to cleanse your "audial palate" with some free singer-songwriter fare. BT's (Bobby Trigg's) Bistro has just the thing: an intimate evening of singer-songwriters starting at 9 pm on Tuesday, July 6th. The line up includes Chris HarfordClemens KnieperJohanna Warren, and Christina Ward.



BT Bistro is located at 3499 Route 1. South, next to the Clarion Palmer Inn in Princeton, NJ (just south of the Princeton Marketfair.) 

Part Time Director Needed to Keep the Music Playing

TRENTON COMMUNITY MUSIC SCHOOL seeks a part time School Director to begin working on August 15, 2010. Salary for this 16 hour a week position is $16,000 a year. 

Current locations: Wessel Hall of Blessed Sacrament Church, 716 Bellevue Ave., Trenton and the Copeland Center, 520 Chestnut Avenue, Trenton

Responsibilities:

Establish and maintain good relationships with faculty, staff, clients, vendors and landlord.      
Responsible for opening and closing two school sites.
Schedule teachers and substitutes, assign tasks to office staff and volunteers, keep accurate timesheets.
Maintain physical plant and office machinery.
Maintain instruments as needed.
Purchase books, reeds, strings, etc. for teaching and supplies for the office as needed. 
Register and schedule students; keep accurate records of attendance and makeups.
Collect and keep accurate records of tuition and other payments; make timely bank deposits. 
Create and distribute announcements to parents.
Assist Executive Director to plan and execute 5 recitals a year. 
Ensure regular cleaning of office and teaching studios.

Education: A college degree in a relevant curriculum is a plus.   In some cases, extensive music teaching and/or performance experience may substitute for formal educational credentials.

Office experience required:   Must be able to confidently run/use the following equipment: computer (proficiency in Excel and Word software is essential), CD player, calculator, telephone, fax, copier, credit card terminal and related office machines.  

General Comments: This job requires self-motivation, exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, attention to detail, a spirit of cooperation, and a cool head.  The School Director must lead a team of professional faculty, oversee an administrative assistant, and collaborate with the Executive Director and other staff members.  Familiarity with the city of Trenton and its residents is strongly preferred.   

Hours: 16 hours a week.  3-9 pm Tuesdays; 8:30 am-3:30 pm Saturdays, plus 3 additional hours flexible time.

Artful Re-Use

"Art From Found Objects"
A Juried Exhibition at the Monmouth Museum
September 12 - October 31, 2010


This exhibition focuses on artwork created from the undisguised, but often modified, use of common found objects that are not normally considered art, often because they already have a non-art function.


Found art derives its identity as "Art" from the designation placed upon it by the artist. "Trash Art" is included in this exhibition as works are primarily comprised from components that have been discarded and then found. 75% of the media used to create works for this exhibition must be from either discarded, reusable or found objects.

JUROR
The juror is Harriet Taub, Executive Director, Materials for the Arts (MFTA), NYC Department of Cultural Affairs.


ELIGIBILITY
Open to all artists world-wide age 18 and over. All artwork entered must be original creations by the artist and must have been completed within in the last five years.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Submissions are limited to a maximum of TWO pieces. Artists are requested to submit digital images in JPEG format either via email or on a CD.

SUBMISSION FEES
Monmouth Museum Members: FREE (see membership form at www.monmouthmuseum.org) Non-members: $20 per piece entered (limit: 2 pieces)

CD Entries with payment must arrive at the Monmouth Museum by 4:30 pm. Email entries and payment must be received by 4:30 pm.

West Windsor Arts Council seeks artists for Inaugural Show


Call for Artists



For Immediate Release: June 15, 2010. West Windsor Arts Council will open the new West Windsor Arts Center in the historic Alexander Road firehouse, in Fall 2010, with a premiere season of performing and visual arts events and programs.  
We are seeking artwork for our first art exhibition that will be part of our Grand Opening Celebration scheduled for Sept. 25. The opening reception for the exhibit will take place Oct. 2, and the exhibit will run through Oct. 29.
The theme of our first art show is Community Collage: West Windsor Then and Now*. We are looking for artwork that speaks to the cultural and historic diversity in West Windsor and the immediate region. The idea of the Community Collage doesn't have to be taken literally, but will convey people bringing their stories together, each adding a piece to the community fabric. 
We are seeking artwork framed and ready to be hung from wire. Artwork can be up to 5 linear feet in any direction, and can weigh up to 50 pounds. Artists may submit up to three works, one image per work. There is an entry fee of $5 per image submitted. 
 
As a gift to the artist community, WWAC will waive its usual 30 percent commission on art sales for this opening exhibit only; artists who elect to sell their work will receive 100 percent of the sale. West Windsor Arts Council will promote the exhibit with press releases, email marketing and on our website. Artwork will be insured by WWAC from time of delivery to time of pick up by the artist or the artist's representative. 
Our juror for this exhibition, Tricia Fagan, is curator of the Gallery at Mercer County Community College and a West Windsor resident. As a co-founder of Trenton Avant Garde, she directed the annual Women's History Month art shows, including the original Dangerous Women exhibit.  She is a grant-writer and historic preservation specialist for Mercer County’s Division of Culture and Heritage.
To submit work, please send to West Windsor Arts Council, PO Box 952, West Windsor, NJ 08550: 
-   A CD or a USB key with images of the artwork. One image per work, please. Jpeg images should be high quality, no larger than 4-by-6 inches with a resolution of at least 300 dpi.
-   A check for the entry fee payable to West Windsor Art Council ($5 per entry).
-   An “image sheet” listing your images in the following format: Title, medium, year produced, dimensions (height x width), price. This list must exactly match the order and titles of the works on the CD.
-   Contact information, email address and website (if applicable).
-   A two-sentence bio.
-   Artist statement about your work.
-   A self-addressed stamped envelope if you would like your material returned.

Accepted artists will be notified by e-mail Aug. 20
Accepted artwork is to be delivered to the West Windsor Arts Center, Alexander Road, Sept. 17, 3 p.m.-6 p.m., and 18, 10 a.m.-12 noon.

Oct. 2 – Opening reception for Community Collage exhibit

Bring whatever you need to create your artwork.  West Windsor Arts Council will provide bottled water to artists who register at the WWAC tent on July 03.

Help Needed in Artists Search

Hopefully, you've all saved the date (July 9, 6-9 pm at ARTWORKS in Trenton, NJ) for the gala exhibit and celebration of Mercer County Cultural & Heritage Commission's 40th Anniversary. We've been working hard to inventory the collection and search out artists. They're all over the map: California, Maine, Florida, Idaho, Maryland, Colorado, New Mexico, Nice (France), Manhattan...But some are still missing. As a last ditch attempt to locate these people, I'm posting the names of folks we been unable to get current contact information for. Caravan of Art this weekend


Thanks to Annelies van Dommelen for the timely reminder that this weekend is the last chance for visitors to check out the FREE self-guided Elephants Eye art studio tour in Bucks County.


You’re welcome to join the artists from 10am till 6pm on Saturday, May 22 and/or between 11am till 5pm on Sunday, May 23. No reservations are required. Just come out and enjoy!! You can start at any location at any time. The Elephant's Eye Tour is FREE and artwork is for sale.

If you haven't received a copy of the "Official Tour Map" in the mail, you can pick one up at your first stop on the tour or download a brochure/map from the Elephant Eye Tour web site. Also on the web site, you'll find a complete list of participating studios, information about the visiting artists, and even a list of places to stop for food, coffee, or general browsing!

The always-glorious Pat Martin (that's her image, above) is holding forth at the Bunker Hill Studio in Ottsville on the northern end of the tour.

Art Among The Flowers!

This year's Trenton Mill Hill Garden Tour takes place on Saturday June 12th, from noon to 5pm. As part of the tour, they will be doing an "Artist in the Alley" display area, and are looking for artists who want to show off their artwork. Space is free to exhibiting artists and you can sell your items if you choose. Each year about 300 people tour the gardens in this historic neighborhood, nestled along the Assunpink Creek, besides Mill Hill Park in Trenton. The event happens rain or shine.

Creative Demonstration

Grumbacher Paint is looking to hire accomplished acrylic painters to teach two hour workshops at a major retailer in locations across the United State and Canada. Artists must be capable of demonstrating a still life, landscape, seascape, and floral. They have developed a flexible curriculum in acrylics for an artist to use or adapt to fit to his or her style, and hope to offer approximately one to four workshops per store per month. The artist will have flexibility in scheduling.

Compensation is $100 per workshop, and teaching materials will be provided to the artist at no cost.

ARTWORKS Gambles on Its Future


Trenton's Rotary Foundation says all bets are ON when it comes to ARTWORKS, Trenton's community art center. And to help put their money where their mouths are, they're hosting a benefit Casino Night on Friday, May 21. It'll take place at the West Trenton Ballroom on Upper Ferry Rd. in Ewing. A $55 ticket gets you dinner, entry to the silent auction, live jazz music, the chance to take a chance at a few gaming tables -- and $50 worth of chips to get you started. All (yes, 100%!!!) of the proceeds goes towards helping to fix-up that beautiful ARTWORKS building. So, don't let the winds of fate "roll the dice" on the future of this great cultural center; come on out for a great evening of fun. Go to the ARTWORKS website for more information.

Exhibit Title: “Whimsy”

Arts Council of the Morris Area’s Gallery at 14 Maple (Morristown, NJ)
Exhibition dates: September 1, 2010 – February 9, 2011

The Arts Council of the Morris Area is seeking fine art submissions in any medium that evoke the theme of “Whimsy” for a group exhibition guest curated by Mary-Kate O’Hare, Ph.D., Associate Curator of American Art at the Newark Museum. “Whimsy” could include interpretations from the capricious, fanciful or fantastic to the unusual, quaint or comical, and beyond. The exhibition will be displayed at the Gallery at 14 Maple, a space in the atrium and common areas of the “green” office building located at 14 Maple Avenue in Morristown, NJ, home to both the Arts Council of the Morris Area and the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation.

ELIGIBILITY: This show is open to all artists working in any medium who live or work in New Jersey. Exhibiting in New Jersey alone does not qualify as working in New Jersey. There is a limit of 3 submissions per artist. All accepted work must be professionally presented and ready for installation or hanging (by wire or D-rings); artists may be required to supply pedestals for 3D work. Work must be available for the entire length of the exhibition.

REQUIRED MATERIALS: Images (see below for presentation requirements), artist’s statement about the works submitted, up-to-date one page resume or c.v., and attached Submission Form with the Object List section fully completed including for each image submitted, the title, year of work, medium, size (H x W x D), weight, value for insurance purposes, and whether the work is for sale.

DEADLINE for SUBMISSIONS: Monday, June 11, 2010 at 5 p.m.; no exceptions.
IMAGE PRESENTATION: Artwork shall be submitted by e-mail submitted to kbecker@morrisarts.org in the form of jPEG images (resolution of 300 dpi). JPEGS must be named as follows: artistsname_titleofwork.jpg or jpeg.
DELIVERY AND PICK UP OF WORK: All work accepted for exhibit must be delivered in person to, and picked up at the end of the exhibit from, the Arts Council of the Morris Area office at 14 Maple Avenue (3rd floor) in Morristown during one of the times set forth below in the Exhibition Calendar.

SALES: The Arts Council of the Morris Area will retain a 20% commission on any work that is sold during the exhibit.

Artists may enter a maximum of 6 matted 2-D original works on paper or canvas, no frames. Works must be able to hang easily on a clothesline. Bring clothespins or clips to hang your images. Artists are responsible for their artwork throughout the show, so bringing lawn chairs is recommended.
