Photography I: just something for fun

There’s a lot to talk about for photographers and photography lovers in this area. To start, photographers may want to check out the Lomography site online. It’s a really fun international photography group/site that offers on-going competitions, and just started an on-line magazine. They also promote relatively inexpensive but curious (in a good way) photography products that you may want to experiment with...the Diana-mini film camera (which takes both square and split frame photos - that's a split frame, above) is my current favorite.

Reflections in a Black Pool

The Mariboe Gallery at Peddie School in Hightstown, NJ, is presenting Black Pool, an exhibition of sculptures and drawings by artist Rachel Frank. The exhibition will run from Friday, September 11 – Wednesday, September 30, 2009.

"Rachel Frank employs the techniques of wood parquetry and inlay to explore how intricate designs such as Islamic and optical illusion patterns can formally inform and subvert three-dimensional sculptures. She harnesses the cosmological implications of each of these formal languages in both public and personal frameworks: how the geometry within the platforms connotes violence; how these objects in space deal with the absence and loss of death. Through these intimate geometries, she determines how the work can suggest infinite space as a reflection on violence and loss."

For directions, check the Peddie School site.

Start the Harvest Fest with Celtic Fun

Na’Bodach

Trent House

Outdoor Highland Concert Saturday, October 3rd, 2009

On the lawn of the 1719 William Trent House Museum, Trenton, NJ

2-4 pm

Featuring: Celtic band Na’Bodach

The 1719 William Trent House, once the summer home of Scotsman and Philadelphia merchant, William Trent, sits on a point (now behind the Hughes Justice Complex) that once commanded one of the area's best views of the Delaware River. This lovely venue, now owned and operated by the City of Trenton, boasts period furniture, a riotous garden and cutting edge interpretation of the first quarter of the 18th century

The concert showcases Na’Bodach, a high energy five-man Celtic band. Incorporating the traditions and culture of Scotland and Ireland into their music, Na’Bodach performs haunting ballads and lively jigs "...arranged in their own high octane compositions..." on traditional Celtic instruments."

Tickets: $20 for adults and $5 for children under 12.

For reservations call 609-989-0087 or purchase tickets at the gate. Check the Trent House website (link above) for directions.

Refreshments including beer, wine, cider, tea and snacks will be provided. Seating will be provided, or bring your own lawn chair. There is ample free parking and the site is wheelchair accessible from William Trent Place and the south parking lot.

Daily Bread - the Show and the Book

Artist Lisa Salamandra (Paris resident from Hamilton, NJ) has spent several years creating terrific paintings on the beautiful bread bags and papers used in Parisian bakeries. A show of her work is opening this week at the Chapin School gallery in Princeton, and the book can be pre-ordered directly from the artist. See her website for more information (and maybe to experience "studio-lust" when you see her working space!)

New Visions from Pakistan

“High Rise: Lake City Drive” by Huma Mulji
“No Two Burns Are the Same” by Ali Raza

There's a lot to report, but there's an 80 piece show (Mercer County Photography) to be hung first! While it's on my mind, though, wanted to share this article in the New York Times on "Hanging Fire" show of contemporary art from Pakistan that opens next Thursday (September 10) at the Asia Society Museum in NYC (upper East Side). The show looks quite interesting, and -- if you've got the money -- the Society's Garden Court Cafe is pretty special. The museum is free on Friday evenings from 6 - 9 pm.
